Son of Christian Veilgaard and Margaret Veilgaard nee Beaton of Nicholson Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. Brother of Kenneth Veilgaard who returned to Australia on 14 June 1918 having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 April 1919 aboard HT Shropshire disembarking on 16 May 1919

During 1922c George married Margaret Mackay Robertson in Victoria.
