Youngest of the four brothers who served in WWII (Keith, Edwin, James and Bruce), Able Seaman Bruce Gilliard Meredith (Service Nos:T20807/H2550) initially served in the Launceston Grammar School Senior Cadets before enlisting in the ACMF on 8 January 1942 - appointed Gun Layer. Gunner Meredith served with 17th Battery and 6 Field Regiment before Discharging on 28 April 1943 to enlist in the RAN the following day. Able Seaman Meredith - appointed Supply Assistant - service included with HMAS Penguin, Lonsdale, and Assault, and he was attached to HMAS Huon at Discharge on 7 June 1946.
Bruce was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1923, youngest of four children (sons) of George Stewart Meredith (b1883 in Wellington, New Zealand) and Ethel Nancy Roxburgh (b1888 in Bathurst, new South Wales). George arrived in Hobart in 1906 on board the SS Warrimoo, and worked for the Launceston Maritime Board. Appointed Secretary and Shipping Master to the Launceston Maritime Board in 1912, George and Ethel married in 1913 in Launceston, where they settled and raised their family and George served as Secretary to the Board.
Bruce was working as a Clerk in Launceston in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Bruce was a Clerk in Launceston in 1947 when he married Audrey Lillian Mackenzie (b1925 in Launceston, Tasmania). Bruce and Audrey settled in Launceston, where they raised their family and Bruce was a Clerk. Audrey died in 2001, and Bruce died in 2018.
