Son of John Jones Byers and Elizabeth Ann Gane

"DEATH. LES. BYERS.

A very sad death occurred in the local hospital early on Monday last when a well known, and, popular young man in the person of Les. Byers passed away. During the Xmas holidays deceased was playing cricket at Julia Creek and was struck on the mouth with a cricket ball. Later his teeth gave him trouble and he had several extracted but septic poisoning set in and he suffered from this for many weeks. Being a strong and determined man he would not seek medical attention until just prior to his death when his sister persuaded him to enter the Cloucurry Hospital but though given unremitting care and attention by Dr. Joyce and the nursing staff he was too far gone and passed away at the time stated.

Deceased who was 42 years of age was born at Hughenden and was fourth-eldest son of the well known Byers family, the father being the late J. J. Byers, who was Land Commissioner in Hughenden many years ago and later opened a Commission agency in that town. Les went to the war, serving with the Light Horse. and on his return opened up a commission agency in Hughenden but after some years relinquished this business and since has followed pastoral pursuits making his home in the Julia Creek district, where his sister resides with her husband Mr. A. D. O.'Neill on Baroona Downs.

The funoral took place from the Presbyterian Church where the coffin lay draped with the union jack, at 3 p.m. Monday. Messrs R. Barton, J. Lisson. J. Grant, D. Sherrington. G. H. Ross and A. J. Hensley, returned soldiers acting as pall bearers. The Rev. H. D. U. Rodgers read a touching service in the Church and later at the grave side and Mr. R. Burness carried out the funeral arrangements. Quite a number of wreaths and messages of sympathy were received including a wreath from the Cloncurry Sub branch of the League and also one from the Women's Auxiliary. Quite a number of returned soldiers attended the funeral." - from the Cloncurry Advocate 16 Mar 1935 (nla.gov.au)
