Pte Cyril Maguire

Pte. Cyril James Maguire (b 1887) SN-1590. 17th Infantry Battalion Australian. He was a ships fireman and native of Melbourne, Australia. He was the son of James and Emmeline (nee Elsey) Maguire (formerly Bowenvale, Vic). He was the husband of Kathleen E. Maguire, of Box Hill Cottages, nr. Henley-on-Thames, England, with whom he had a young daughter, Patricia. He was discharged from the AIF due to "Membranous colitis" (ulcer) that he picked up which fighting at Gallipoli. The ulcer resulted in a substantive loss of weight and eventual discharge on 15th June 1916 in England. After his discharged he gained employment with the Australian High Commission in London and married Kathleen (nee Simmons) in 1916 their daughter Patricia being born in September 1917. He died on the penultimate day of the war, 10th November 1918 due to complications with the flu in St Pancreas’ Hospital. This was the ‘flu epidemic in which many millions of people world-wide, old and young died, in reality many more than were killed during the fighting during WWI. He died leaving his widow Kathleen and a young daughter Patricia.

Pte. Cyril Maquire was the older cousin of Lt John T. "Boy" Maguire MC, 8th Battalion, KIA 4/10/1917.
