Clare was the son of David and Marie Wellman [nee Warner]. Clare left
Adelaide on board HMAT A15 Star of England on 21 September 1915. As a
Driver, he was sent to France with his unit on 8 November. Clare also served in
Egypt throughout 1916, prior to returning to France where he served for the
remainder of the war. At the cessation of hostilities Clare returned to Australia
on the Derbyshire on 2 March 1919 and was discharged on 5 September.
