Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

"Private James Stephen Hogan was the son of Mr. C. Hogan, of 668 Mt. Alexander-road, Moonee Ponds, brother of Miss D. Hogan, head teacher of School 3255, Kinglake West, and nephew of Miss E. Brennan, assistant at North Bendigo, formerly of White Hills.

James Hogan was born and educated at Bendigo, attending the Marist Brothers' College and, later the High School.

Entering the service of this Department, he was a junior teacher at Eaglehawk. He obtained the Trained Teacher's Certificate in 1914, and, in 1915, was appointed to the charge of the school at Carlisle River.

Thence he enlisted, leaving behind him a record as an earnest student and a vigorous, enthusiastic teacher.

After some time in the Army Medical Corps, he was transferred, with many others, to the Infantry. He left Australia in the Nestor on the 2nd of October, 1916, and was killed in action on the 4th of October, 1917."
