Petty Officer Writer Wilfred Henry John Gardiner (Service No:30843) enlisted in the RANR on 30 December 1939 and transferred to the RAN on 30 August 1943. PO Gardiner served as a Writer on a number of ships, including HMA Leeuwin, Cerberus, Penguin and Kattabul and he was attached to HMAS Leeuwin at Discharge on 28 April 1947.

Born in 1907 in Kalgoorlie WA, Bill was the eldest of four children of Wilfred (Will) Hardy Gardiner (b1885 in Drouin, Gippsland, Victoria) and Ethel Hannah May Davies (b1886 in Portland, Victoria). Will (a Sleeper Hewer) and Ethel married in 1906 in Perth WA and lived at Kalgoorlie, Waroona and Nine Mile Camp, Swan before Will enlisted in the AIF in WWI (Driver; Service No:6290). Will was Discharged in Melbourne in 1919, where he worked as a Postal Employee and Tram Driver before returning to Perth where he worked as a Labourer in the mid 1920s. By 1931 Will had returned to Victoria where he was a Farmer at Lakes Entrance. Ethel remained in Perth.

Bill worked as a Butcher in Perth and Fremantle and in 1933 married Mavis Florence Rose (b1908 in Victoria) - they Divorced in 1941 and Bill remarried to Faith Elizabeth Rose Shadbolt (b1914 in Yorkshire, England) - Faith had immigrated in 1916, arriving in Frmantle WA on board the Omrah, and worked in Fremantle as a Stenographer. Bill and Faith settled in Fremantle WA where Bill was a Butcher. Faith died in 1994 and Bill in 1999.
