Youngest of four brothers (Sam, Gordon and Fred) to serve in WWI/WWII, Chief Petty Officer Francis Millar Westlake (Service No:F2886) initially served in the Militia (1 July 1926 - 30 November 1938) with 10th Light Horse Regiment (Service No:VE/240193) before enlisting in the RAN on 1 December 1939. Chief Petty Officer Westlake's service included HMAS Cerberus, Manora, Penguin, Kanimbla and Magnetic, and he was attached to HMAS Leeuwin at Discharge on 3 December 1945.
Born in Mosman Park, Fremantle, Western Australia in 1905, Francis was youngest of six children (sons) of William John Westlake (b1865 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Annie Jane Harry (b1863 in Cornwall, England). Annie had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1869, arriving in Melbourne on board the Lincolnshire, and William arrived in Melbourne in 1888 on board the Te Anau. William was a Coppersmith and Annie a Dressmaker when they married in 1890 in Ballarat, and by 1893 they had settled in Western Australia. William and Annie lived in Fremantle, Cottesloe Beach and Caversham in Guildford, where they raised their family and William was a Coppersmith/Foreman with WAGR.
Francis started work as an Apprentice Fitter in Guildford, and in 1933 was a Marine Engineer on the Koolinda when he married Mena (Bobbie) Lillian Wells (b1907 in Cottesloe, Fremantle, Western Australia) in Perth. Francis and Bobbie lived in Guildford and South Perth, where they raised their family and Francis was a Marine Engineer (his occupation is listed as Fitter in the Electoral Rolls). Bobbie died in 1975 and Francis in 1981.
