Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Arthur Symonds was the son of William Gumma Symonds and Mary Symonds. His parents had been deceased for almost twenty years when he enlisted. He had married in 1913 to Eileen Mayne O’Keefe and they had two children, living at Kuranda, Queensland, when he left for overseas.

He joined up with his brother Edgar and were both put in the 31st Battalion, leaving on the same ship during May 1916.

His younger brother, 3333 Pte. Edgar Symonds 31st Battalion AIF died of wounds in Belgium on the 26 September 1917, aged 28.

Arthur was killed near Passchendaele Ridge in Belgium, only two weeks after his brother Edgar. His remains were discovered along with his identity disc during 1922. He now has a grave in the Duhallow A D S Cemetery at Ypres, Belgium.

His wife and children were awarded pensions. She remarried during 1921.

Another brother, 3492 Corporal John William Symonds 2nd Battalion AIF was returned to Australia during 1918. Another brother Henry enlisted but was discharged before he left Australia as medically unfit.
