William was the eldest of six children of William (Will) George Macfarlane Metcalf (b1889 in Northumberland, England) and Elizabeth Mary Dyson (b1893 in Fremantle, WA). Will (who had worked as a Fruiterer and Gardener) arrived in Fremantle WA in 1913 on board the Orsova. He was a Fireman in Fremantle in 1915 when he married Elizabeth and the couple settled in Fremantle and raised their family. Will was working as a Lumper on Fremantle Wharf in 1943 when he was killed by a load falling from a ship.

In April 1941 William enlisted in the RAN (Service No:F3510) and served as an Assistant Steward and Leading Butcher. He was attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharged in January 1947.

William was in Victoria in 1944 when he married Violet Merle Swift (b1923 in Melbourne, Victoria) in Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria. Following William's Discharge the couple settled in Fremantle WA where William worked as a Butcher. He died in 2004 and Violet in 2013.
