Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

An Original Anzac of The Great War resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

78 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 8th April 1943, Private Arthur Frederick Bott, usually referred to as Frederick, 1st Battalion (Reg No-809), fireman from 43 Frederick Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 10 Reeve Street, Waterloo, N.S.W. and 40 Corona Street, Hamilton East, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-63. 58.

Born at Pyrmont, New South Wales on the 10th November 1883 to Benjamin and Elizabeth Bott, Frederick enlisted August 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W.

Frederick returned home January 1919 (Special 1914 Leave), and was discharged on the 29th March 1919.

Mr Bott’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 12th March 1921, 335 names now inscribed, 44 Fallen) and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle and District Firemen Honour Roll.

Younger brother Walter Henry (2nd Battalion, Reg No-2578, born 1894, died 1942) resting same location.

There is no indication inscribed on the headstone that these 2 brothers served during The Great War, so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of their sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Lest We Forget.
