Andrew was the eldest of three children of Dickson Russell Johnston (b1878 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Maud Thompson Abercrombie (b1880 in Mt Duneed, Victoria). Dickson - a Clerk - and Maud married in 1911 in Melbourne, Victoria. By 1914 the family had relocated to Perth, WA where Dickson was an Accountant.
In 1937 Andrew was a Clerk in Fremantle WA when he married Mavis Gertrude Bickford (b1915 in Subiaco, Perth, WA). In 1939 Andrew accepted a Commission with the RANVR, and was a Lieutenant Commander attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharged on 27 November 1945. He continued service with the RANVR and was placed on the Retired List on 2 September 1960. On 20 February 1947 Andrew was awarded the Reserve Officers' Decoration.
Andrew and Mavis relocated to Wittenoom Gorge in the Pilbara in WA, where Andrew was an Accountant. I 1958 the family was living in Sydney NSW and Andrew was an Accountant and Manager before returning to Perth WA in the mid 1970s. Andrew died in 1978 and Mavis in 1997.
