The fifth of six children, Roy was born in York WA in 1916 to Arthur (Friday) Edward Heal (b1883 in York WA) and Molly (Mary) Eyre (b1884 in Dongadilly, York WA). Friday (a Farmer) and Molly married in 1906 in York WA where they settled and raised their family. By 1916 Friday was working as a Labourer in York WA.

Roy was a Labourer in York WA in 1939 when he married Enid Elsie Trevatt (b1921 in Wagin, WA) and in October 1940 Roy enlisted in the RAN (Ordinary Seaman; Service No:F3218). Roy served on a number of ships, including HMAS Leeuwin, Cerberus, Penguin and Torrens. In September 1941 he was serving on HMAS Yandra when he was promoted to Able Seaman. He was an Able Seaman attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharged in December 1945.

Roy and Enid were Divorced in 1949 and both remarried - Roy in 1957 to Patricia Mary Butcher (nee White; b1921 in Narrogin WA) - Patricia and her husband lived in York until his death in 1955. Roy and Patricia settled in York WA where Roy worked as a Truck Driver and Farmer before moving to Fremantle WA in the early 1970s. Roy died in 2003 and Patricia in 2013.
