Petty Officer Edgar Victor Bartels (Service No:26660) enlisted in the RAN on 29 July 1943 and was attached to HMAS Leeuwin at Discharge on 3 May 1946.

Born in 1910 in Brisbane QLD, Edgar was the twelfth of fourteen children of Franz Heinrich Bartels (b1865 in Germany) and Caroline Schweikert (b1872 in Rawbelle, Wide Bay, QLD). Franz arrived in Sydney NSW in 1882 on board the Etna and was a Cigar Maker in Brisbane, QLD when he and Caroline married in 1894. Franz and Caroline settled in Brisbane, QLD where Franz was a Cigar Maker before moving the family to Texas, QLD in 1911 where Franz was a Farmer on Gunyan Station. By 1925 Franz and Caroline had returned to Brisbane where Franz resumed work as a Cigar Maker.

Edgar was a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD and in 1936 married Idella Eliza Munt (b1914 in Laidley, Darling Downs, QLD). Edgar and Idella settled in Laidley where Edgar was a Labourer before moving to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast in QLD where he worked as a Roller Driver and Mechanic. Following his service in the RAN, Edgar and Idella lived in Brisbane and Roma where Edgar worked as a Roller Driver, Machine and Plant Operator. Edgar died in 1976 and Idella in 2008.
