Eric was the youngest of two children of Richard Francis Nicholls (b1875 in Beverley, WA) and Ellen Makeham (b1876 in Chewton, Victoria). Richard - a Farm Hand - and Ellen married in Narrogin in 1907. After joining the WA Government Railways in the late 1920s, the family lived in the Northam and Narrogin areas before Richard and Elizabeth settled in Perth WA.
Eric worked as a Railway Repairer for the WAGR between 1936 and 1946. In October 1941 he enlisted in the RAN (Stoker; Service No:F3872) and was attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharhed in 1946
Returning to Perth, WA Eric was a Barman in 1949 when he married Elsie Grace Parkin (nee Carruthers b1912 in Perth WA) - Elsie was a Barmaid. Eric and Elsie settled in Perth, where Eric worked as a Barman, Manager and Machinist, Elsie died in 1972 and Eric in 2008.
