Gerald was the fourth of six children of Andrew (Sam) Samuel Dyson (b1893 in Perth, WA) and Mabel (Mary) Ursula Gould (b1896 in Berkshire, England). Sam (a Soldier in the AIF) and Mary (a Lady's Maid in Pimlico, London) married in London in 1916. Sam served in Gallipoli and France (Private; Service No:26) and was Discharged in December 1918. Mary arrived in Melbourne, Victoria with their first born son in October 1918 on board the Patria. The family settled in Perth WA where Sam worked as a Packer/Warehouseman and Salesman and served with the ACMF (Warrant Officer II; Service No:W237592) in WWII.
Gerald was a Cadet (seventeen years of age) when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve in August 1943. He was an Able Seaman (Service No:F/V312) attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharged in June 1946. Older brothers Cyril and Doug served in WWII, and youngest brother Stan served in the RAN from 1950 to 1969.
Returning to Perth WA, Gerald worked as a Bus Driver and in 1950 married Patricia May Dwyer (b1924 in Perth, WA). The couple settled in Perth where Gerald worked as a Bus Driver and Truck Driver. Gerald and Patricia divorced in the 1960s, and in the mid 1970s Gerald married for the second time to Mary Theresa. By 1980 the couple had moved to Cannington, WA where Gerald worked as a Salesman and Mary as a Driver. In the early 1990s Gerald and Mary retired to Lancellin WA. Gerald died in 2004.
