Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Petty Officer/Constable Alfred Edward Victor Tanner (Service No:1492) served in the RAN from 10 December 1942 to 24 May 1961, attached to HMAS Leeuwin and HMAS Kuttubul.

Born in Albany, Western Australia in 1925, Alfred was third of four children of Harry Victor Tanner (b1892 in Geelong, Victoria) and his first wife Maryann Helena Eliza Chapman (b1889 in Albany, Western Australia). Harry was a Farm Hand in Albany when he and Maryann married in 1910, and settled at Redmond via Albany where Harry was a Farmer. In the 1930s Harry (a Farmer in Porongorup) and Maryann (a Boardinghouse Keeper in Albany) separated, divorcing in 1941. Both remarried - Maryann remained in Albany, and Harry (following his discharge from the Army in 1948) lived in Perth and Northam.

Alfred was a Laboratory Technician in Fremantle when he enlisted in the RAN, and in 1946 in Fremantle married Eileen Priscilla Miller (b1920 in Fremantle, Western Australia). Alfred and Eileen settled in Fremantle, where they raised their family and Alfred was in the RAN until 1961. Following his discharge, Alfred and Eileen remained in Fremantle - Alfred died in 1966 and Eileen in 2012.
