Elder of two brothers (William and Reginald) who served in WWII, Able Seaman William Armstrong Spinks Davis (Service No:PM3261) enlisted in the RAN at Port Melbourne on 30 December 1940 as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMAS Cerberus. Promoted to Able Seaman on board the Ballarat on 30 December 1941, he served with HMAS Cerberus, Lonsdale, Ballarat, and was attached to HMAS Leeuwin at Discharge on 2 January 1946.
Bill was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1916, second of five children of William Armstrong Davis (b1887 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Minnie Wheatley (b1889 in Grantville, Victoria). William (a Boot Finisher) and Minnie (a Machinist) married in 1913 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and William worked as a Boot Finisher.
Bill was a Wicker Worker in Melbourne in 1940 when he enlisted in the RAN, and in 1941 in Melbourne married his first wife Thelma Mary Lingard (b1916 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Thelma was working as a Dressmaker in Melbourne. Following his Discharge from the Navy in 1946, Bill and Thelma settled in Melbourne, where Bill worked as a Fitter. Thelma died in childbirth in 1947, and Bill was working as a Pattern Maker in 1953 when he remarried to Edna May Baker. Bill and Edna settled in Melbourne, where Bill worked as a Pattern Maker and Manager. Bill died in 2007 and Edna died in 2024.
