Stoker II George Lacco initially enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V18221) at Central Recruiting Depot Melbourne on 6 August 1941 and was attached to Army School of Mechanisation Puckapunyal on 9 May 1942 when he Discharged to enlist in the RAN. Stoker II Lacco served on HMAS Cerberus, Platypus, and Magnetic and was attached to HMAS Lonsdale at Discharge on 8 September 1943 (approved to be demobilised to work in his trade of boatbuilding: NAA).
George was born in Queenscliff, Victoria in 1922, youngest of six children of Patrick (Mitch) Mitchell Lacco (b1883 in McCrae, Victoria) and Lucy Mary Wickham (b1884 in Ipswich, QLD). Mitch (descended from a lighthouse crew family) was a Boat Builder in 1907 when he and Lucy married in Melton, Victoria. In 1916 they moved to Queenscliff where they raised their family and Mitch was a Boat Builder before settling in Rosebud in 1928. Following Lucy's death in 1947, Mitch remarried in 1954 to Beatrice Victoria Hannah Anderson (nee Munyard; b1887 in Melbourne, Victoria). Mitch and his sons were Boat Builders, Sail Makers and Fishermen, and during WWII built boats for the US and Australian forces (Steve Burnham Editorial Enterprises).
George worked as a Boat Builder in Rosebud prior to his service in WWII. In 1942 in Rosebud he married Mary Jean Elliott (b1921 in Rainbow, Victoria). Following his Discharge, George and Mary lived in Rosebud and Frankston before settling in Mornington where they raised their family and George was a Boat Builder and Fisherman. George died in 1983 and Mary in 2005.
