Leading Writier Jean Roberts Simpkin (Service No:Wr/2084) served in the WRAN from 9 May 1944 to 9 October 1946 and was attached to HMAS Lonsdale at Discharge. Her father served in WWI and WWII, and sibling Grace also served in WWII.
Jean Roberta was born in 1925 in Beaufort Victoria, youngest of three children of Leslie (Les/Simmo) William Simpkin (b1894 in Lexton, Victoria) and Evelyn Annie Emily Baulch (b1900 in Lexton, Victoria). Les had served in WWI (Driver; Service No:899) and was a Farmer at Lexton when he and Evelyn married in Ballarat in 1920. By 1924 Les and Evelyn were living in Healesville, where Les was Municipal Clerk. The family later lived in Cobden, Cohuna and Rokewood where Les was Municipal Clerk and Shire Secretary. Les served in WWII (Lieutenant; Service No:V76978).
Jean worked as a Clerk before enlistment, and following Discharge was a Clerk in Melbourne in 1951 when she married Ian David Wilson (b1921 in Geelong, Victoria) - Ian was working in Melbourne as a Clerk, and had served in the RAN (Sub Lieutenant; Service No:24972) on HMAS Lonsdale. Jean and Ian settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Ian worked as a Clerk. Jean was described in My Tributes (Herald Sun) 'With her fabulous sense of style that crossed generations, Jean's cheeky wit brought laughter, love and cheer to all those she interacted with'.
