As a 24 year old, Alan enlisted for service with Regimental Number 2909 and following basic training was appointed to the 6th reinforcement draft for the 44th Battalion. He embarked on the HMAT A34 Persic in Fremantle on 29 Dec 1916 and disembarked in Devonport on 3 Mar 1917 before being sent to the 11th Training Battalion at Sutton Manderville. Prior to going to France he ran foul of the authorities with disorderly behavior in his tent.

From Southampton he travelled to France on 19 Jun 1917, and was reallocated to the 11th Light Trench Mortar Battery until 17 Aug 1917 when he was posted to the 44th Battalion. Alan was appointed Lance Corporal on 27 Oct 1917, and was soon after sick - absent form his unit between 29 Nov and 9 Dec 1917. He again required medical attention between 24 Jan and 6 Feb 1918, and from 27 Feb until 18 Apr 1918 (VD). Returning from leave on 16 Feb 1918 he was 1 hour 1 minutes late and for this he was reduced to Private. Disheartened he was again in hospital with VD from 31 May to 27 Jun 1918.

On 23 Aug 1918 he was admitted to hospital with concussion (Wounded in action), rejoining his unit on 9 Sep 1918. Alan was again appointed Lance Corporal on 20 oct 1918, then Temporary Corporal on 30 Oct 1918, and Corporal on 10 Dec 1918. On 19 Feb 1919 he was attached to the Australian Base Depot at Rouelles, and from there sent to the UK to prepare for the trip home on SS Königin Luise, leaving England on 21 Jun 1919, and disembarking on 3 Aug 1919. He was discharged at 5th Military District  (Perth) on 10 Sep 1919.
