Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

105 years ago today, on the 15th May 1917, Private Edward Dixon Deas, 54th Battalion (Reg No-1113), labourer and cabinet maker from 60 Chinchen Street, Islington, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt, France, age 23.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 9th April 1894 to James (died 1938) and Roseanna (Rosanna, died 1938, no funeral notice or obituary located) Deas of Turner Street, Georgetown, New South Wales and 33 Gulliver Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., Edward enlisted January 1916 with the 34th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Mr. Deas’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Edward’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, 3rd Australian Garrison Artillery Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled date unknown, 50 names inscribed, 8 Fallen, proudly displayed at the Fort Scratchley Military Museum, Nobbys Road, N.S.W.) and the Hamilton-Rose of Hamilton Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour.

There is no memorial inscription on the family gravesite plaque to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Edward’s supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
