Sgt Francis Stevenson (Marine Engineer) together with Cpl James Hogan (Coxswain) rescued 16 commandos in extremely rough seas in Port Phillip Rip and out in Bass Straight in four distinct and separate rescues on the night of the 17th of February 1960 aboard the 40-foot army workboat AM1872 Yambuck.
Having put the 16 commandos ashore at Queenscliff and in the absence of any further orders or information Stevenson and Hogan decided to once again venture out into Bass Straight in appaling conditions to seek further survivors. Their courage is undoubted and certainly of the highest order.
