Raymond Ferres Townsend – B3310 – Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Raymond Ferres (Ferrers) Townsend was born 22 Jan 1924 at Brisbane, the child of Claude & May Townsend. When Raymond was 18 years old he joined the Royal Australian Navy on 24 Jan 1942 at Brisbane. His father Claude was already serving in the 47th Battalion and he had served during WW1! His father was a School Teacher at Woongaara near Bundaberg before the war. Many Thanks to Debra Litzow for your help in locating this man.
Raymond served on many HMAS bases around Australia including Melville at Darwin, Penguin at Sydney, Moreton at Brisbane. He was an Able Rating (Radar) on HMAS Lonsdale at Melbourne when discharged from the Navy on 9 Jul 1946.
In 1945 whilst in Sydney Raymond married Margaret Johanna Johnson and by 1954 they were living in 1st Ave, Kingaroy in 1954, bank officer. I am thinking that Raymond’s link to Wooroolin is that he was working at the QN Bank there at some stage. There are 2 pages of his Navy records available on the NAA website but show service only.
During the early 1950’s there are several Government Gazette Appointments for Raymond Ferrers Townsend with the Postal Dept as well as the Dept of Trades & Customs but it seems he stayed with Banking.
Raymond moved from Kingaroy to Toowoomba, Gympie and then Darwin, NT in 1968. Raymond died in 1970, just 46 years of age. (NB: I have not found a death record for Raymond, just a note in an Ancestry Tree of death date. I have not found any records for him after 1968 but his wife lived on the Gold Coast.)
