Chief Petty Officer (Cook) Edward Joseph Scully (Service No:4041) enlisted in the RAN on 4 August 1914 as a Boy Servant on board the training ship Tingara. He served on HMAS Cerberus and a number of other ships before his Discharge from HMAS Lonsdale on 3 January 1946.
Born in 1898 in London England, Edward was the eldest of three children of Joseph Scully (b1869 in London, England) and Rhoda Nash (b1876 in London, England). Joseph (a Bread Baker) and Rhoda married in 1895 in London. Joseph served with 77th Middlesex Regiment (Regimental No:T/12192) in 1895, and in 1912 immigrated with eldest son Edward, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the SS Moravian - Rhoda and the two younger children followed in 1913. Joseph and Rhoda settled in Geelong, Victoria, and in 1916 Joseph was in Wagga Wagga, NSW when he enlisted in the AIF (Service No:3448). Discharged as Medically Unfit in 1917, Joseph returned to Geelong, Victoria where he worked as a Saw Mill Labourer.
In January 1913 Edward was listed as Missing from his home in Geelong, Victoria by his father - the notice in the Police Gazette described Edward as wearing a fancy vest, tweed trousers, Norfolk jacket and carrying a gladstone bag and a basket. In 1914 Edward enlisted in the RAN, and in 1918 in Sydney NSW married Caroline Lowe (b1893 in Middlesex, England) - Caroline was a Domestic Servant. Edward and Caroline lived in Sydney NSW and Frankston, Victoria whilst Edward remained in the RAN until 1946. Following his Discharge, Edward and Caroline settled in Frankston, Victoria where Edward worked as a Cook and Caterer. Caroline died in 1950 and Edward in 1965.
