Alfred was born 6th May 1891 in Fillongley and was baptised on 28 Jun 1891 at Fillongley St. Mary & All Saints.
He was the son of William and Mary Ann Craner of Fillongley.
In 1901 he was at school (Fillongley Church of England)
By 1911 he had moved to White House Farm, Weddington where he lived as a boarder and worked as Stockman.
On 15 August 1913 he emigrated to Australia via Freemantle aboard SS Omrah (Orient Line) and stated he was employed as a Butcher, his arrival record not found.
On his Army Attestation form he stated that he was employed as a Boundary Rider.
