Gilbert Theodore Haxle STEPHEN was born in 1898 in the Aboriginal Mission at Ramahyuck in Gippsland, Victoria

His parents were Harry STEPHEN & Emily Milton WOOD

He enlisted in Horsham on 28th May, 1917 and embarked with the 5th Infantry Battalion, 25th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 4th August, 1917 on the HMAT Themistocles & served on the Western Front

He returned to Australia on 6th May, 1919 due to illness and died in the 11th Australian General Hospital in Victoria of Pneumonia & Bronchitis

Gilbert is buried in the Brighton General Cemetery & his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and the Lake Tyers Honour Roll
