First World War, Harry FRANKLIN volunteered to serve overseas with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He embarked at Sydney, New South Wales aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 23 December 1916. He was a member of the 41st Infantry Battalion. The Battle of Somme
His Dad Joseph and Mum Helene didn’t know if he was alive or dead. For months he laid in a hospital in England when word finally came in the form of a telegram to his parents that he was alive. He brought back to Australia his English bride and settled on a property at Stuart River Kingaroy.
Harry was the eldest of the 14 siblings. Both he and his wife Winnifred reared 17 children. 5 boys 12 girls. Harry and Winnie have 6 surviving daughters Winnie who turned 100 last December. Edith, Dorothy, Violet, Ina, Margaret. The youngest daughter Carmel recently passed away few short weeks ago.
Harry is fondly remembered by all his descendants for his service and sacrifice for his country.
