  • Born 1897 to Thomas Upsell (1868-1954) & Lillian Elizabeth Stubbs (nee Ryder) (1869-1915) in D'Arcy Street, Mount Morgan, Queensland
  • Father worked for the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co.
  • One of five children, the third eldest
  • Enlisted in Rockhampton (age 18 years) on 13 September 1915
  • 1st AIF 42nd Infantry Battalion
  • Trained at Salisbury Plain, England.
  • King George V inspected the troops
  • Deployed to France late 1916
  • Gunshot wounds to right arm and neck, recovered in England
  • Returned to Australia late 1918
  • Worked on family farm and for Mount Morgan Limited
  • 1937 married Alice Cora Henrietta Keyes (1914-1985) in Mount Morgan Queensland
  • One son, Daryl Allen
  • Owned and managed Baree grocey store in Mount Morgan district
