59 years ago today, on the 7th March 1966, Private Hilary Nicholas Flood, Australian Broad Guage Railway Operating Company (Reg No-3143), a farrier from Goulburn Street, Crookwell, New South Wales and Wallsend?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 3-89. 47.
Born at Crookwell, New South Wales on the 9th October 1893 to Joseph James, Joe, died tragically 23.12.1907, Crookwell, N.S.W., age 50, buried at Crookwell General Cemetery, N.S.W., and Sarah Jane Flood nee Rolfe, died 27.1.1939, Goulburn, N.S.W., age 85, mother of 7, sleeping at Crookwell General Cemetery, N.S.W., from Colyer Street, Crookwell, N.S.W.; husband of Charlotte Gertrude Flood nee Lewis, married 26.2.1921, Goulburn, N.S.W., divorced 1939, re-married to Alice Flood nee Spence 1941, Randwick, N.S.W., died?, Hilary enlisted on the 2nd October 1916 with the 55th Battalion at Goulburn, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.
Wounded in action - 24.4.1918 (gassed), 1.9.1918 (SW scalp).
Granted leave to England from 15.10.1918 to 8.11.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 23.6.1919.
Hilary arrived home on the 9th August 1919, being discharged on the 16th September 1919.
Mr. Flood’s name has been inscribed on the Crookwell War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Hilary’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
