Stoker Herbert Llewellyn Crook (Service No:11289) enlisted in the RAN on 27 May 1919. In 1926 he was on board HMAS Yarra and after a break in Service, by 1937 was again a Stoker in the RAN. He served on a number of ships, including HMAS Cerberus, Platypus, Sydney, Margeurite and Yarra, and was attached to HMAS Mayborough when he was Discharged on 27 February 1946.
Born in 1900 in Dandenong, Melbourne Victoria, Bert was the second of five children of Frederick Athorn Crook (b1869 in Berwick, Victoria) and Julia Frances Charman (b1876 in Narre Warren, Victoria). Frederick (a Bicycle Maker) and Julia married in 1899 in Melbourne Victoria where they settled and raised their family. Frederick died in 1907 and Julia remarried in 1912.
Bert enlisted in the RAN in 1919 and in 1927 was unemployed and living in Dandenong in Melbourne, Victoria. By 1928 he was working as a Motor Driver when he married Christine (Ena) Muriel McQueen (b1906 in Melbourne, Victoria) Bert and Ena settled in Melbourne where Bert worked as an Engine Driver. By 1937 Bert is recorded as being back in the RAN as a Stoker until 1946.
Bert and Ena remained in Melbourne and following his Discharge from the RAN, Bert worked as a Boiler Attendant. Bert died in 1976 and Ena in 1981.
