Ordinary Seaman John Tanner (Service No:PM8544) served in the RAN from 5 June 1945 to 19 May 1947. Seaman Tanner (Telegrapher) served on HMAS Cerberus, Lonsdale, Harman and Penguin, and was attached to HMAS Mildura at Discharge.

Jack was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1927, youngest of two children of Walter John Tanner (b1893 in Blackwarry, Gippsland, Victoria) and Stella Eocean Owen (b1895 in Chiltern, Victoria). Walter was a Teacher in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Lieutenant; Service No:4602) and was in Wagga Wagga NSW in 1921 when he and Stella married. They settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Walter was a Teacher - and served in WWII with the ACMF (Captain; Service No:V6706).

Jack worked as a Clerk in Melbourne before enlisting in the Navy. In 1953 in Melbourne, he married Nancy Lynette Laity (b1932 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Nancy was a Hairdresser. Jack and Nancy settled in Melbourne, where Jack worked as a Clerk and Nancy as a Hairdresser. By the 1970s, Jack was a Paper Merchant and Nancy a Saleswoman. Jack died in 2017.
