Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Anxiety is felt for the safety of George Crawford Yule (53), who has been missing from his home in Menin Street, Corinda, since Saturday morning. It is stated that he left home with the intention of visiting the Labour Bureau in Edward Street, city. Yule is 5ft. 8in. in height, and has a fair complexion, and brown hair, turning grey. When he was last seen he was wearing a navy blue serge suit, a white shirt, and grey hat. He had only a few shillings in his possession. Six months ago Yule disappeared in similar circumstances, and he was later located, suffering from loss of memory, at Currumbin. Biography contributed by Heather Walker

George Crawford Yule is my grandfather. My mother is his eldest daughter. His family lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, and when his parents married they emigrated to the USA to seek a new life. George and his sister were born in New York and the family returned to Edinburgh when he was 10 years old, owing to his mother's ill health. When his father remarried, George left home at 15 to seek his fortune. He worked in many jobs, including work on freighters sailing to many parts of the world. Finally he settled in Brisbane working as a yardman at a local hotel before enlisting in the Australian Army in 1914.

After being injured and demobilised he met his future wife whom he had known in childhood in Edinburgh. They married and moved to Australia to a soldier settlement in Elimbah, Queensland in the early 1920's.

The family could not make a profitable living from the pineapple farm and moved to Corinda, Brisbane in the late 1920's where his wife worked as the district nurse.

My mother says he was a very quiet, introverted man who spoke little about the war. Unfortunately, during the Great Depression, he was unable to obtain regular work and became quite depressed. He wandered away from home a number of times due to his depression and loss of memory. Eventually he disappeared and it was discovered by the family that he died in Sydney in 1953.
