Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Private Herman Soltau, prior to enlisting over 18 months ago, was a piumber at Orange. Private Fred. Soltau was a grocer at Wyong and enlisted at Newcastle 18 months ago. They were sons of Mr. and Mrs. F. Soltau of 48 Pitt-street, Redfern, and for 30 years residents of Orange.

PTE. HERMAN SOLTAU.
We regret to report the death in action in France of Private Herman Soltau, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Soltau, who until recently were life-long residents of Orange. It will be remembered that Pte. Soltau conducted a plumbing business in Summer street for some considerable time, and was a well respected resident of the community. He sailed for the front in September last, and when he arrived in England was surprised at meeting his brother Fred in camp only a short distance from him, and who he thought was still in  Australia. The deceased soldier had only been about a week in the firing line when death overtook him, and added another name to the list of Orange heroes who have died for their country.
