20/34 Infantry Battalion AMF (Parramatta and Blue Mountains / Illawarra Regiment)

About This Unit

Formed in December 1943, the 20/34 Infantry Battalion was disbanded on 6 April 1944.

Piror to its formation, however, in late December 1943, the 34th Infantry Battalion had been a Militia unit undertaking various garrison and defence duties during the early part of World War Two.

Previously, at the outbreak of World War Two the 20th Infantry Battalion had been linked with the 19th Infantry Battalion and was known as the 20th/19th Infantry Battalion. This Militia unit was posted to Darwin forming part of the Top End's defences. However, on 1 November 1941 the 20th/19th Infantry Battalion was delinked to form two separate Militia units - the 19th and the 20th. The 20th Infantry Battalion remained a separate entity until it was amalgamated with the 34th Infantry Battalion in 1943.
