About This Unit
In 1943, the 56th Infantry Battalion (Riverina Regiment) was gazetted as an AIF unit after 75% of its personnel within its ranks volunteered to serve outside of Australia. However, even though it was now classed an AIF unit, the 56th Infantry Battalion never saw service outside of Australia. It was disbanded on 9 June 1944.
