About This Unit
The 3rd Brigade was raised on the outbreak of War from the "outer States" as C.E.W. Bean described them and comprised:
The 9th Battalion (Qld)
the 10th Battalion (SA)
the 11th Battalion (WA), and
the 12th Battalion (Tas / SA / WA)
The component units were embarked in late October to join the great convoy that made its way to War. Initially destined for the Western Front, the ANZAC forces were instead disembarked in Egypt to take part in an operation to gain access to the Black Sea via the Dardanelles.
After the failure of a naval campaign to 'force the Narrows', it was decided to land an Expeditionary Force to seize the western shore - what has become known as Gallipoli.
The 3rd Brigade was designated as the "Covering Force". They were to be first ashore.
