UNAMIR II Australian Service Contingent 1 & 2

About This Unit

UNAMIR II was the UN esponse to the civil war and genocide in Rwanda, 1994-95.

Australia, at the direction of the Commonwealth Government,  formed a Medical Support Force, comprising a contingent HQ, to be co-located with HQ UNAMIR II, a force HQ, A Mecial Company which operated in effect a Field Hospital and Surgical capability, augmented with a Rifle Company Security element from 2/4RAR and 2 RAR, and a composite Support Company.

Two rotations of personnel (ASC I and ASCII) were contributed by the Australian Government.  Personnel were drawn from around Australia, from all three services, Reserve and Regular men and women.  The force was Army-led.

 

AS 1 deployed in August 1994 and was relieved by ASC 2 on 20 Feb 1995.  ASC 2 returned to Australia on 23 August 1995.
