About This Unit
Abbey Wood Base
In 1915 as the numbers of Australians and New Zealanders being discharged from hospitals in the United Kingdom began to rise it became essential to establish a depot for them to report to for convalescence and retraining before returning to active service. A special depot was established at Monte Video Camp near Weymouth under the command of Major General Sir Newton J. Moore. Moore organised the camp to receive and train men who were likely to be fit to return to the front. Men who were marked for return to Australia were received at a camp nearby at Wareham. A third depot was formed nearer to London at Abbey Wood and a convalescent home at HarefieldPark in Middlesex.
