The 5th Division was raised in Egypt in February 1916 as part of the expansion of the AIF. It comprised the following Infantry Brigades:

8^th Brigade (All States, expect TAS)

14^th Brigade (NSW)

15^th Brigade (VIC/ NSW)

The 8^th Brigade was raised entirely in Australia before the expansion of the AIF had occurred and thus contained only fresh troops. The 14^th and 15^th Brigades, however, were formed half by experienced Gallipoli troops from the 1^st and 2^nd Brigades respectfully with the other half formed by fresh reinforcements from Australia.
