2nd/3rd Anti Tank / Tank Attack Regiment 9th Division, 2nd AIF

About This Unit

The 2nd/3rd Anti-Tank Regiment

Also Known as 3rd Tank Attack Regiment.

The 2nd/3rd Anti-Tank Regiment, 2nd AIF was formed in July 1940 at Warwick Farm in SW Sydney. Shortly after being brought up to full strength, but without its full establishment of weaponary, the Regiment embarked for the Middle East where it became part of the newly formed 9th Division.

The regiment saw service throughout the Western Desert campaign, where elements of the regiment got caught up in the Siege of Tobruk. The regiment later went on to see action during the battle of El Alamein. The unit was then sent back to Australia where after training went on to see service in both New Guinea and Borneo.

In 1943, the Army re-designated all of its 'Anti Tank' units to 'Tank Attack', presumably to somehow imbue a more offensive tone to the role than is implied by the word 'Anti'.
