Son of James O'Neill and Mary Jane Kerr formerly O'Neill nee Costello of Woodside, Victoria
Brother of Joseph Geoffrey O'Neill who returned to Australia on 22 Mayl 1919 having served with the 24th Battalion; Maurice Edward O'Neill who was killed in action on 30 June 1916 while serving with the 24th Battalion and is buried in the Ration Farm Military Cemetery, Plot 1, Row I, Grave 3.
Prior to enlisting Simon was a member of the Woodside Rifle Club
Commenced return to Australia on 2 March 1919 aboard HT Derbyshire disembarking on 22 April 1919
