Died on this date – 24th January…… Pte Oscar Cameron was born at Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1873.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Melbourne, Victoria on 20th February, 1917 as a 36 year old, single, Ship’s Officer.
Private Oscar Cameron embarked from Sydney on HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) on 16th July, 1917 with the 59th Infantry Battalion, 9th Reinforcements. Whilst at Capetown, on the journey from Australia to England, he was absent without leave for 2 days from 16th August to 18th August, 1917 & as a result forfeited 4 days pay. Private Cameron disembarked at Liverpool, England on 16th September, 1917.
On 17th September, 1917 Private Cameron was marched in to 15th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire where he would receive further training before being sent to the War Front.
He was admitted to Hospital at Codford, Wiltshire on 22nd December, 1917.
Private Oscar Cameron died on 24th January, 1918 at 4.45 p.m. at No. 3 New Zealand General Hospital, Codford, Wiltshire. A Post Mortem was completed on 25th January, 1918 & the cause of death was “Heart failure, due to chronic Bright’s Disease.” Later notifications in Private Cameron’s service record stated he died of Chronic Nephritis (Inflammation of kidneys).
He was buried in St Mary’s New Churchyard (Anzac Cemetery), Codford, Wiltshire, England, where 30 other WW1 Australian War Graves, 66 WW1 New Zealand & 1 UK Soldier are laid to rest.
