Able Seaman Robert Arthur Cranley (Service No:S/4943) enlisted in the RAN on 30 December 1940 as an Ordinary Seaman, and on 24 April 1942 was rated Able Seaman. A/S Cranley served on HMAS Ruschctter, Leeuwin, Cerberus, Canberra and Narana, and was attached to HMAS Penguin at Discharge on 10 January 1946.

Bob was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1923, second of six children of Anthony (Joe) Phillip Cranley (nee Scardigli; b1887 in Sydney, New South Wales) and his second wife Alice Jane Martin (b1896 in Sydney, New South Wales). Joe (a Widower, working as a Barman) and Alice married in 1920 in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Joe worked as a Labourer. Joe decided to change his surname, and all his children have the surname Cranley.

Bob was seventeen years of age when he enlisted in the Navy. In 1944 in Sydney he married Esma Pennual Piggott (b1923 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Esma was working as a Paper Bag Maker in Sydney. Following his Discharge from the Navy, Bob and Esma settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Bob worked as a Weighbridge Attendant. Bob died in 2013 - decribed in his Obituary as 'a good and loyal husband, who took great care of his family'.  Esma died in 2015.
