Lieutenant Edward William Sturm enlisted with RANVR/Naval Auxiliary Patrol (NAP) on 1 September 1942 as Staff Skipper/Sub Lieutenant on HMAS Torrens. The NAP was responsible for patrolling and safeguarding inner harbours, ports, rivers and estuaries from enemy attack. On 1 October 1943 he was promoted to Squadron Skipper/Lieutenant and was attached to HMAS Torrens at discharge on 17 March 1945.

Born in New Zealnd, Edward was the eighth of twelve children of James Frederick Sturm (b1856 in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand) and Emily Jane Morgan (b1861 in Christchurch, New Zealand). James (a Fruiterer/Gardener) and Emily married in 1878 in Napier NZ where they settled and raised their family.

Edward was a Telegraphist in December 1915 when he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces (Sapper; Service No:4/2035) and served in Egypt. He was in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919 when he married Catherine (Kate) Falconer (b1896 in Perth WA). Edward and Kate lived in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide where Edward was a Sales Superintendent and Business Manager. Edward died in 1971 and Kate in 1987.
