DEARLY LOVED SON OF MR. & MRS. F. PENNEY QUEANBEYAN,N.S.W. AT REST
Another Local Soldier Fallen.
It was the sad duty this morning of the Rev. R.Elliott to convey to the father and other relatives of Pte. William Penney, son of Mr. Frank Penney of this town, the tidings that he had been killed in action at the front on the 17th of April. Thus, within one and the same week, no less than three of our local lads who had consecrated themselves to the great service demanded of the lovers of liberty and righteousness have made the supreme sacrifice. Pte. Penney, it will be remembered, was one of the splendid " Snowy River Boys," whose march through Queanbeyan will ever re main bright in the memories of us all. As we have said in other like cases, the stricken family have our deepest sympathy, as, we are sure, they will have that of the entire community with them in this dark hour of their bitter grief.
A memorial tablet to perpetuate the memory of the late Private William B. P. Penney, has been placed in Christ Church, Queanbeyan, by the deceased soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Penney. The tablet, which is of Gothic design, is a beautiful specimen of the sculptor's work, and reflects in no small measure on the skill of Mr. J. A. Byrant, our local monumental mason, who was entrusted with its design and erection. The marble used is Sicillian and Carrara upon which is lettered the inscription: "To the Glory of God. In memory of William Benson Percy Penney, 55th Battalion, A.I.F., killed in action, Aubigny (France), 17tl April, 1918, aged 32 years." The tablet occupies a prominent position on the wall on the left hand of the pulpit, and will be unveiled by Corporal J. McKie,. of Bun. gendore, a very old friend of the deceased young soldier, on Sunday morning next.
