He was 28 and the son of William Jackson Smith and Catherine Smith of 11, Albert Rd., Walthamstow, London, England. His mother passed away just weeks after he was killed.

He is remembered on the family grave at Chingford Mount Cemetery, London E.4.

The inscription on his war grave reads:
