Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
94 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 24th September 1929, Private William J Denham, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-426), rigger from Douglas Street, Stockton, New South Wales and 25 Bryant Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 2-144. 9.
Born at Somerset, England about 1875 to Alfred and Elizabeth Denham; husband of Celia T Denham nee? (married?, died 16.9.1957, age 78, 28 years a widow, sleeping here), Will enlisted on the 1st March 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 13th May 1916.
Wounded in action - 16.7.1917 (GSW right leg).
Granted leave to England from 22.10.1917 to 3.11.1917.
Admitted to hospital 12.5.1917 (malaria), 4.10.1918 (pyrexia or trench fever).
Embarked for England 7.10.1918.
Will was invalided home on the 20th April 1919, being discharged medically unfit (effort syndrome) on the 10th June 1919.
Mr. Denham’s name has been inscribed on the Stockton Soldiers' Memorial, Stockton St. Paul's Anglican Church Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
