Biography contributed by Chris Buckley
Born in Greenbushes WA in 1914, Ernie was the second of seven children of David Josiah Stinton (b1889 in Bunbury WA) and Constance Stroud (b1895 in Capel, WA). David (aka Josiah; a Mill Hand at Nangs Brook) and Constance married in 1912 in Blackwood, WA. Josiah was closely associated with early group settlement activities, and in 1923 carted timber to the group settlements - Constance, who sometimes accompanied him on the horse and dray had witnessed the hardhsips faced by the group settlers and 'had seen wives, after inspecting their virgin land, just sit down under a tree and cry' (Busselton Margaret River Times; 1981). Josiah and Constance lived in Bridgetown WA where Josiah worked as a Tin Miner, and at Lilyvale where he was a Farmer. Josiah and Constance retired to Busseltown.
Ernie was working as a Truck Driver in Busselton in November 1939 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service No:WX618).
