Francis was the son of Frances Albert SNELL & Elizabeth Mary BYRNES and was born on the 13th of September 1896 in Sutherlands, SA.

Francis was a clerk with the South Australian Railways.

Francis enlisted into the 9th Light Horse, 24th Reinforcements on the 16th of September 1916 in Adelaide and was allotted the service number 3078. He listed his mother as next of kin.

He embarked on the 5th of February 1917 aboard the “Clan MacCorqudale”, disembarking in Suez on the 12th of March.

He served with the 9th Light Horse the entire time, but did suffer from many bouts of Dermatitis, Tonsillitis and Pharyngitis, which saw him in and out of Moascar Hospital.

He embarked for from Pt Said for Australia aboard the “H.T Dorset” on the 29th of April 1919. Francis was discharged on the 19th of July 1919.

Francis married Dorothy Nell BENNETT on the 27th of September 1919 in St Laurences Church, North Adelaide. Dorothy was the daughter of John Henry BENNETT & Ellen Mabel MORPHETT nee ROWE and was born on the 7th of August 1900 in Truro, SA.

In 1939 they lived in Riverton and Francis was a station master and the vice president of the bowling club.

They were then transferred to Wolseley railway station, before transferring to Terowie by 1943.

By 1945 they had left Terowie.

Francis died on the 27th of December 1959 in Springbank, SA and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery; Catholic B, Path B1, Plot 188.

Dorothy died on the 4th of April 1984 and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery; Catholic B, Path B1, Plot 188, with Francis.
